Not alone

Within the structures of the bark, we encounter faces – enigmatic, unfamiliar and familiar all at once. The photographs remove them from their natural surroundings and reveal what often only becomes apparent at second glance.

Grooves become wrinkles, knotholes become eyes, cracks become mouths. From organic forms, silent characters emerge that seem to be watching us, without ever fully revealing themselves.

Perhaps trees are more than silent witnesses to the passage of time. Perhaps every living thing possesses its own soul – a quiet force that connects us, even if we cannot see or understand it.

In these tree faces, something seems to be peering through the bark. Something ancient, vulnerable and yet powerful. Black-and-white photography strips everything down to the essentials and leaves room for the invisible, for our imagination and for the question of just how much life we can actually perceive in nature.

Perhaps we simply need to look more closely to discover that we are not alone.
