Vivarium humanicum

A vivarium is a controlled, enclosed space used for housing, observing and studying living organisms. Its basic function is to enable the targeted analysis of behaviour, adaptation and interaction within an artificially created environment. Particularly in zoos or scientific institutions, the vivarium represents a zone of objectification: it separates the observing subject – usually a human – from the observed object – usually an animal – and thereby creates an unbalanced structure of power and perception.
